  • Definition and types of stereoisomerism with examples; optical activity: chirality, origin of chirality, plane of symmetry, axis of symmetry
  • R/S configuration: Cahn-Ingold-Prelog rules; enantiomers, diastereomers, meso compounds; racemic mixtures and resolution methods
  • Geometric isomerism: cis/trans (E/Z) in alkenes and cyclic compounds; conformational isomerism in cyclohexane; atropisomerism in biphenyl compounds

Five-Membered Heterocyclic Compounds8 Hours
  • IUPAC nomenclature and classification of heterocyclic compounds; aromaticity in heterocycles
  • Furan: preparation, reactions (electrophilic substitution, Diels-Alder), pharmaceutical derivatives
  • Thiophene: preparation, reactions, pharmaceutical significance; Pyrrole: preparation, acidity, reactions; porphyrins and bile pigments; Imidazole and pyrazole: properties and pharmaceutical applications

Six-Membered Heterocyclic Compounds8 Hours
  • Pyridine: aromaticity, basicity, electrophilic and nucleophilic substitutions; pharmaceutical preparations (isoniazid, niacin)
  • Pyrimidine: tautomerism, preparation, reactions; uracil, thymine, cytosine as components of nucleic acids; pharmaceutical drugs
  • Pyrazine, piperazine, and their pharmaceutical applications (anthelmintics, antifungals)

Fused Ring Heterocycles8 Hours
  • Quinoline: preparation (Skraup synthesis, Combes synthesis), reactions, pharmaceutical applications (chloroquine, quinine)
  • Isoquinoline: preparation, properties, alkaloids of isoquinoline origin (papaverine, morphine skeleton)
  • Indole: preparation (Fischer indole synthesis), reactions; pharmaceutical alkaloids (tryptamine, serotonin, ergot alkaloids); Benzimidazole: preparation and pharmaceutical applications (antiparasitic, proton pump inhibitors)

Pharmaceutical Significance of Heterocyclic Drugs8 Hours
  • Barbiturates: structure-activity relationship; mechanism of CNS depression; classification and examples
  • Benzodiazepines: structure, mechanism, clinical applications; NSAIDs with heterocyclic cores (indomethacin, piroxicam, celecoxib)
  • Antibacterial heterocycles: β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins — ring system and SAR); sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones; antifungal azoles (fluconazole, ketoconazole)
