  • Medicinally important alkaloids: morphine, codeine, quinine, ephedrine, caffeine, atropine, hyoscine, reserpine, vinblastine, vincristine

  • Definition, general properties, classification of glycosides (O-, N-, S-, C-glycosides); hydrolysis products
  • Cardiac glycosides: digitalis glycosides (digoxin, digitoxin) — chemistry, extraction, pharmacological significance
  • Anthraquinone glycosides (senna, cascara), saponin glycosides (liquorice, ginseng), cyanogenic and thiocyanogenic glycosides

Volatile Oils, Resins and Oleoresins8 Hours
  • Volatile oils: definition, general properties, chemical composition (terpenes, terpenoids, phenylpropanoids); extraction methods (steam distillation, cold pressing, solvent extraction)
  • Important volatile oils: peppermint, clove, eucalyptus, cinnamon, fennel, cardamom, turpentine — biological source, constituents, uses
  • Resins and oleoresins: definition, classification, chemistry; colophony, podophyllum, jalap — source, constituents, uses

Tannins, Flavonoids and Terpenoids10 Hours
  • Tannins: definition, classification (hydrolysable and condensed), chemistry, identification tests; pharmaceutical applications; tannic acid, catechu, black catechu
  • Flavonoids: definition, classification (flavones, flavonols, flavanones, isoflavones, chalcones), biosynthesis; rutin, quercetin, hesperidin — source and uses
  • Terpenoids: classification (mono, sesqui, di, tri, tetraterpenes); biosynthesis (MVA pathway); important terpenoids: artemisinin, taxol, stevioside

Phytochemical Screening Methods and Drug Standardization9 Hours
  • Phytochemical screening: qualitative tests for alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, sterols, fixed oils
  • Standardization of plant drugs: WHO guidelines; pharmacopoeial standards; chemical fingerprinting by TLC, HPLC, HPTLC
  • Chromatographic methods of isolation: column chromatography, preparative TLC, HPLC — applications in natural product isolation
