Skin Biology and Assessment6 Hours
  • Skin structure: epidermis layers (stratum corneum, granulosum, spinosum, basale), dermis, hypodermis; Fitzpatrick skin types; TEWL measurement
  • Skin ageing: intrinsic (chronological) and extrinsic (photoageing) ageing; mechanisms (ROS, UV damage, collagen degradation, glycation)
  • Skin assessment methods: corneometry (hydration), tewameter (TEWL), cutometer (elasticity), mexameter (melanin and erythema); in vivo and in vitro testing

Cosmetic Formulations6 Hours
  • Creams and lotions: O/W and W/O emulsions; emulsifiers; humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid); occlusives; emollients; preservatives; antioxidants
  • Sunscreens: UV radiation; UVA/UVB filters (organic and inorganic); SPF measurement; broad-spectrum protection; photostability
  • Shampoos, conditioners, hair colours, and styling products: formulation principles; surfactants in hair care; permanent and temporary hair colouring

Active Ingredients in Cosmeceuticals6 Hours
  • Anti-ageing actives: retinoids (retinol, retinal, retinyl esters) — mechanism, formulation challenges; peptides (matrixyl, argireline); niacinamide; vitamin C (ascorbic acid stability)
  • Skin-lightening agents: kojic acid, arbutin, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid — mechanism and safety; regulatory status
  • AHAs and BHAs: glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid — mechanism, skin benefits, irritation potential; hyaluronic acid and ceramides

  • India: Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 provisions for cosmetics; Schedule S (standards); BIS standards; import regulations; labelling requirements
  • EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009: prohibited and restricted substances; notification portal (CPNP); safety assessment requirements; labelling
  • USA: FD&C Act provisions for cosmetics; FDA oversight; voluntary cosmetic registration programme; labelling requirements; cosmeceutical concept and regulatory grey area

Cosmetic Testing and Quality Control6 Hours
  • Safety testing: patch test (Draize), sensitisation test, phototoxicity, photosensitisation, comedogenicity testing; human repeat insult patch test (HRIPT)
  • Stability testing of cosmetic products: accelerated and real-time stability; compatibility with packaging; challenge testing (microbial); pH stability
  • Efficacy testing: clinical studies for anti-wrinkle, whitening, moisturising claims; instrumental methods vs. clinical assessment; cosmetic claims substantiation
